Newberry College Alumnus Retires as Newberry Chief of Police

Newberry College alumnus Jackie Swindler 79 will retire as the City of Newberrys Chief of Police. Swindler joined the department in 1975 and was named police chief in 1993. During his 39-year career with the Newberry Police Department, Chief Swindler earned many accolades, including the prestigious Strom Thurmond Award for Excellence in Law Enforcement. He also served as president of the South Carolina Law Enforcement Officers Association and president of the South Carolina Police Chiefs Association. Under his leadership, the police departments emphasis on traffic safety regularly earned industry recognition for achievements in accident reduction and for accident prevention education programs aimed at teens. Chief Swindler graduated from Newberry College in 1979 and earned his master of arts in Criminal Justice from the University of South Carolina.

 

Chief Swindler will retire on June 30. The city will honor him at a reception on June 22, from 3-5 p.m., at the Firehouse Conference Center. The event is open to the public.
