Newberry College Announces First 56 Initiative

August 5, 2019

NEWBERRY — Newberry College has announced the return of its First 56 initiative to welcome, educate and engage students in campus life.

The initiative, now in its second year, features at least one event each of the first 56 days of fall semester, beginning Aug. 15. The program takes its name from 1856, the year the college was founded.

“First 56 has been a huge success, and we looking to make this programming initiative a tradition for the campus,” said Michael Smith, director of student engagement and Greek Life. “The goal is to create a vibrant environment for campus engagement that all students, from our freshmen to our graduating seniors, can enjoy.”

The programming includes interactive entertainment, concerts, tournaments, community fairs, and seminars for student organizations and professional development. There are over 100 events slated until the series ends mid-October with fall break, all designed to engage students in the critical first weeks of the semester.

“At Newberry College, we pride ourselves on our active student body, full of volunteerism and a desire to get involved and lead change. These qualities will serve them well in college and in their lives beyond,” said Dean of Students Sandra Rouse. “The First 56 has been an excellent catalyst for student engagement, and we look forward to another great year.”
