Newberry College recently conferred degrees upon its inaugural class of graduates in the Respiratory Therapy online degree-completion program.

Nine students became the first to earn their bachelor’s degrees in the degree-completion program that was launched in January 2018. The graduates received their degrees at the College’s spring commencement, held May 4 at Eleazer Arena on the Newberry campus.

“This first class of Respiratory Therapy graduates are well-equipped to excel in this fast-growing, critical field,” said Dr. Jerry Alewine, chair of the Department of Respiratory Therapy. “We are so proud of what they have accomplished in earning their baccalaureate degree and pleased to be able to offer a program that allows working professionals to complete their degree and still manage the demands of work, home and family.”

Graduates of the inaugural B.S. in Respiratory Therapy class were:

Joseph Anthony Ariale, Jr. – Summerville, S.C.

Kevin Tyler Berry – Spartanburg, S.C.

Janet Williams Carter – Ninety Six, S.C.

Mandy Joy de Vries – Charleston, S.C.

Tammy Marshall – Greenwood, S.C.

Erin Denise Mosley – Columbia, S.C.

Norma Nely Pineda – Greenwood, S.C.

Elizabeth Ridge Richey – Fort Mill, S.C.

Brittany Nicole Williams – Newberry, S.C.

The 12-month program, completed entirely online, is designed for licensed respiratory therapists seeking to earn their baccalaureate degree. Increasingly, bachelor’s degrees are becoming the preferred credential for respiratory therapists just entering the field and for established professionals seeking career advancement.

“As one of the first schools in South Carolina to offer a B.S. in Respiratory Therapy, and the first to graduate a BSRT class, Newberry College is in a unique position to help professionals advance their careers and better serve their patients.”

Respiratory Therapy is one of four online degree-completion programs Newberry College offers, along with RN-to-BSN, Psychology, and Criminal Justice. Over the coming year, the college plans to add online programs for Healthcare Management and Business Administration.
