Newberry College assistant professor of Nursing Dwaine Thomas, a Columbia, S.C., resident, has received the Rosalie Mirenda Education Fellow Award for her development of a learning module for the Neuman Systems Model (NSM). 

The NSM is a widely used framework utilized throughout the world for producing positive outcomes with patients. It serves as the guiding conceptual framework for the Newberry College Nursing program. 

The Education Fellow Award is given by the Newman Systems Model Education Academy to recognize educators for outstanding contributions in the use of the NSM as a guide for nursing education. 

“I am honored to receive this award,” Thomas said. “I am proud to say that, initially, the module was used by teachers and clinical instructors to guide their understanding of the Neuman Systems Model, but now it is also being used by RNs returning to Newberry College for their BSN degrees.” 

Thomas will accept the award and present her work on the new learning module at the Neuman Systems Model biennial international symposium being held in June in Canton, Ohio. The honor includes a monetary award which Thomas plans to donate to the Newberry College Department of Nursing for the purchase of new equipment for its simulation labs. 

“Professor Thomas has been an invaluable asset to the nursing program at Newberry,” said Dr. Susan Ludwick, chair of the Department of Nursing at Newberry College. “As this honor demonstrates, she is both an educator and an innovator.”
