Three of Five Lexington One Teacher of the Year Finalists are Newberry College Graduates

Lexington School District One just announced its five finalists for District Teacher of the Year. Three of the five finalists are Newberry College graduates!

An English language arts and drama teacher, Debb C. Adams 95 teaches sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders at White Knoll Middle. An educator for 15 years, Adams holds a Bachelor of Arts in English and theatre and speech from Newberry College and a Master of Education in adolescent literacy and technology from Walden University. Adams is National Board Certified in early adolescent English language arts and has English and middle-level language arts certifications.

Meadow Glen Middles Albert H. Robertson 06 has taught for eight years. Currently a sixth-grade social studies teacher, he earned a Bachelor of Arts in history from Newberry College and a Master of Education in educational administration from the University of South Carolina. He holds elementary administration, middle and high school level social studies certifications.

An educator of seven years, Blair Jeter Robertson 06 currently teaches second grade at Meadow Glen Elementary. She holds a Bachelor of Science in elementary education with a concentration in history from Newberry College. She is certified in elementary education.

In a further twist, two of the three Newberry College finalists are married to each other and met while at Newberry College! Blair and Albert Robertson married after graduating together in 2006. They have two children, Lucas Gray (age 4) and Holly Claire (age 3). The Robertsons met at Newberry College while they were candidates in the Teacher Education and Summerland Honors programs. They were married in June of 2007.

In October, certified staff at each Lexington District One school chose a 20132014 school-level Teacher of the Year. The candidates completed written applications, which were judged by five teams of judges. Finally, the 10 applications with top scores were judged by a different team of six judges.

In the coming weeks, another panel of judges will spend a day observing the finalists as they teach and interview them. The district will announce its new Teacher of the Year on Thursday, April 10, 2014, at an evening celebration honoring all school-level Teachers of the Year.
